Pine Valley Ranch Park

This Jeffco Park seems to be one gateway into a network of trails that wind through the Buffalo Creek and Lost Creek Wilderness areas. It is located near the small town of Pine. In 1996 and again in 2000, this area suffered extensive forest fires. As you can see from the pictures, we would certainly have been riding in a pretty dense forest of ponderosa pine had these fires not occured. However, the standing and lying dead made for a different kind of inspiring scenery with our signature Colorado blue sky as the backdrop to their grave. All things remain lush and green with flowers in bloom everywhere you look as our stormy, wet June continues here in the West.

Centennial Cone Open Space

This nice open space is somewhat of a new acquistion within the last few years for Jefferson County. I have hiked there a few times, but never have been able to complete the twelve mile loop secondary to the closure of the Elk Range Trail because of the calving elk herd. Finally today, with Jessica on Butch and myself on Yuma, we rode this loop trail. It was extremely difficult to narrow my photos down to ONLY seven as it was quite a breathtaking ride. While we didn't spot any wildlife, we were privledged to have an abundance of Colorado blue sky and green fields as far as the eye could see just full of wildflowers. Nearing the end of our journey, the storm clouds moved in with their usual summer urgency...........it was time to beat a hasty retreat!

The creek in the photos (one is a bit blurry) is Clear Creek that runs along Highway 6.

Reynolds Park

Since the air was heavy with humidity, the views from this Jefferson County Open Space Park outside of Conifer, were somewhat hazy. We are on our eighth straight day of severe weather that rolls in each day, sometimes even before the noon hour. I was putting away my trailer in the pouring rain and when I returned home to Denver, the tornado sirens were blasting. All typical for us during the past week.

We covered 7 miles in quick time as I was mounted on Yuma, instead of Butch. God bless him, I love hime to death, but...............he's very slow. In his favor, he REALLY watches where he puts his feet. Wildflowers were blooming in abundance: flax, columbine, wild geranium, indian paint brush, blue clematis, and many others I cannot name. At times the ground was carpeted with small white flowers with taller ones of blue, purple, fushia, yellow, and gold. The color green was the most predominant. Everything is so lush at this time, but will quickly fade away when the summer heat makes it's appearance. It won't be long now I'm afraid. Ahhh...........those dog days of summer!

Garden of the Gods

A typical Colorado warm, bright sunny day was the backdrop for the most spectacular scenery that is Garden of the Gods, just outside Colorado Springs. The longer than usual drive south on I25 because of road construction did not dampen this small groups enthusiasm for our trail ride in this park. Heavy park and pedestrian traffic was the norm, but still, we managed to find ourselves utterly alone much of the time. On a scale of one to ten, this ride rates a solid "10" for sure!

Apex Open Space Park

What a great day for riding. Apex Park is another Jefferson County Open Space Park that is close by to the stable. Maybe was a fifteen minute drive with more than ample parking. The trailhead is located at Heritage Square. The planned ride could not be completed due to the loss of a front shoe on Daisy. We did cover 5.5 miles of the planned 8.2 miles. We will return again and complete the planned ride that'll take us up to Buffalo Bill's gravesite. Now........how exciting is that!!!??? Nice park. Two thumbs up!

The photos are Noel and Daisy looking towards Green Mountain (another open space park), and North and South Table Mountains looking towards Golden. The beautiful green valley was a surprise and there were many homes located there. Great horse property for sure. Finally, a photo of Butch, well, just being Butch.

Boulder Open Space Park. Mesa Trail.

An abundance of sunshine and warm early summer-like temperatures, was the setting for this ride on the Mesa Trail located a couple of miles west off Highway 93 going towards Boulder. Noel on Daisy, and I, of course, on Butch, traveled at a slow pace, 6.30 miles in 3 hours. I think s-l-o-w is Butch's middle name!
